Colorado Rapids in advanced talks to sign Zack Steffen from Manchester City
The Colorado Rapids are in advanced talks over a deal to sign U.S. national team goalkeeper Zack Steffen from Manchester City, sources briefed on the deal tell The Athletic.
The deal is not yet done but talks are progressing.
Steffen, 28, joined City from the Columbus Crew in 2019 after starring in MLS, winning the league’s Goalkeeper of the Year award after the 2018 season. He went on several loans after joining City, including at Bundesliga club Fortuna Dusseldorf and most recently with Middlesbrough in the EFL Championship.

The American has made 84 first-team appearances for all those clubs after joining City in a deal worth around $7 million.
Steffen has missed the first half of the current European season with a knee injury. He had surgery in the summer, taking away any chance he had of being loaned out from City for playing time as expected this year.
Steffen had been the first-choice USMNT goalkeeper entering the 2022 World Cup cycle, but fell out of favor behind Matt Turner and ultimately was left off the roster that traveled to Qatar. Steffen has 29 caps for the national team.
Colorado finished bottom of the Western Conference in 2023 and is undergoing an overhaul this winter. The club named Chris Armas head coach and already moved on from key veterans Jack Price and Diego Rubio. It’s unclear how Steffen would hit Colorado’s roster; the Rapids currently have the maximum three designated players under contract for 2024 Andreas Maxsø, Kevin Cabral and Rafael Navarro.
