In Memoriam: Remembering the Legacy of Donn Johnson
The FOX 2 family is mourning the loss of a beloved member, longtime broadcast journalist Donn Johnson, who passed away earlier this week, as confirmed by his family.
Donn Johnson’s connection with St. Louis ran deep, having grown up in the city and dedicating significant portions of his career to FOX 2 in the 1980s, 1990s, and early 2000s. He was a journalist with an unwavering passion for storytelling, and he embraced a multitude of opportunities, whether it be behind the anchor desk or out in the field.
Surrounded by family members and loved ones, Donn Johnson passed away on a Wednesday, leaving a void that will be deeply felt.
Reflecting on her father’s life, Donn’s daughter, Laura Johnson, shared, “Dad lived an amazing life, and he loved St. Louis and St. Louis broadcasting. He had such a profound impact on broadcasters here, particularly cared about the Black broadcasters and establishing a legacy.”
Donn Johnson was a vocal advocate for greater diversity in the media industry. “In addition to constructive criticisms, there was always this sense of advocacy,” noted close friend Bonita Cornute. “He seemed to be the one you could always count on if you had a problem in the newsroom.”
Johnson’s journey in broadcasting commenced with radio, where, in 1973, he made history by becoming the first full-time African American reporter on WIL-AM. He joined FOX 2 in 1978 and was well-remembered for his comprehensive city hall coverage.
A larger-than-life presence in countless St. Louis households, Johnson was passionate about discussing politics and baseball. He even had the privilege of collaborating with the renowned sportscaster Bob Costas on Spirits of St. Louis radio broadcasts in the 1970s. Recalling their partnership, Costas shared, “We did all the home games together, and we became very good friends. He was more than just a respected professional; he was a good person, which is what matters most, and a good friend to so many of us.”
Many, including FOX 2’s Elliott Davis, have cherished memories of working alongside Donn Johnson.
At the age of 76, after a battle with pancreatic cancer, Johnson’s remarkable journey came to an end. His family cared for him in his final months, and Laura expressed her gratitude, mentioning that her parents had celebrated 54 years of marriage, enjoyed a trip to Alaska, and, just last month, Donn had the honor of walking her down the aisle.
