When Dushmantha was first discovered in local cricket, talent scouts had quickly earmarked him as a future international cricketer due to his quick, skiddy pace bowling. He had started representing the Nondescripts Cricket Club in 2012 where the coaches believed that within 2-3 years, he could become the quickest bowler in the country.
His breakthrough came in the 2013-14 domestic season where he had played a key role in the team’s championship win by claiming 32 wickets at a stellar average of 21.18.
Dushmantha had made his international debut for Sri Lanka in an ODI match against New Zealand in January 2015. He had scalped his first international wicket in his very first over of that match by dismissing the highly experienced middle-order batter Ross Taylor with a searing delivery that was clocked at 146 kph. He went on to take the wicket of Grant Elliott, helping Sri Lanka win the match.
Soon after this performance, he had been selected in Sri Lanka’s squad for the 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup. He was not selected in the playing XI for Sri Lanka’s first 5 matches of the group stage. In the team’s final match of the group stage, against Scotland, as the team was resting key players before the knockout phase of the tournament, he had been given a chance to show his skills. He had picked up 3 wickets for 51 runs, helping Sri Lanka win the match.
A few months later, in June 2015, he had made his test match debut, against Pakistan. In the 2nd innings of that match, the second of the series, he had guided Sri Lanka to a series-leveling win, by taking 3 wickets. He had suffered a side strain during the match and was ruled out of the third and final test match of the series. Sri Lanka went on to lose that match and, consequently, the series by a 2-1 margin.
