He auditioned at the SM Global Audition in 2007 which were held in Chicago.

Johnny became a trainee with the South Korean entertainment agency, SM Entertainment, in 2008 when he was only 14.

He initially started as the member of SM Rookies, a pre-debut training team created by SM Entertainment in 2013, and was introduced as a member on December 24, 2013.

In August 2014, his first dance video came out when he was seen in the song, Super Moon, along with fellow SM Rookies members.

He was announced as the member of NCT‘s subgroup, NCT 127, in December 2016.
