Written and produced by Sam J Garfield, “Monsters” takes his signature electro-pop sound and amplifies it around a synth-heavy production that matches his indelible vocals. Being this vulnerable is not an easy thing to do, and you can hear the subtle calm behind the words whilst also showcasing that there is a cry for help thrown in. Superbly written, the “Monsters” lyrics delve into feeling more comfortable amongst the monsters under your bed rather than fighting them, settling into becoming a monster yourself. As time goes on you realise you aren’t really happy hiding away and being another monster under your bed, and so the introspective lyrics reflect on these thoughts and feelings. The rolling synths and upbeat backing track provide hopeful positivity, with Sam J Garfield impressing with a unique production style that breaks away from traditional electro-pop and allows him to pave his own unique path in the music industry which sets a new precedent amongst the experimental electronic genre.
As for the music video, directed by Carter Ray with Zack Rickeimer acting as Director of Photography, we start with the camera closing in on a door in a hallway, which soon opens to a bedroom where Sam J Garfield is sitting atop the bed wearing nothing but a pair of Calvin Klein briefs and as the camera rises to his face, it soon shoots down to under the bed where Sam J Garfield is chilling, resting on his arms as he starts to sing the track into the camera. Soon he is joined by a yellow puppet monster and a purple-blue puppet monster, who he clearly makes friends with and just enjoys spending time with. Scenes are later intercut throughout of Sam J Garfield spending time on the top of the bed and around the bedroom, feeling lost, alone, and upset. He’s slowly identifying with the monsters under the bed, feeling like he’s becoming one himself, whilst also realising that he doesn’t actually belong. Highly conceptual with an open-to-interpretation narrative that fuses brilliantly with the iconic addicting synth-heavy track, Sam J Garfield is clearly a masterful artist in every sense of the word.
