Tyson Fury corner man Freddie Roach says trainer Ben Davison cried during Deontay Wilder fight as he
Tyson Fury’s corner man Freddie Roach shocked the boxing world with his public criticism of head trainer Ben Davison.
Roach joined Davison ahead of Fury’s title fight against Deontay Wilder and was in the Brit's corner for the disputed draw on December 1.
Now, a week after the bout’s conclusion, the 58-year-old has given an interview in which he reveals disagreements with the man 32 years his junior, and even claims he was crying in the corner after Wilder knocked Fury down in the twelfth.
When asked if it was true that Ben Davison was in tears, Freddie Roach told Fox Fair Game:
“He was. He thought for sure that he wasn’t going to get up and he was really worried.
“The instructors in the corners really had to hold him down and settle him down.
“He wanted to go into the ring to take care of his fighter, but if you go in that ring it’s an automatic disqualification.
“So we had to hold him down and let it play out.”
Despite believing Tyson Fury did enough to win the fight on points, Freddie Roach insists the Brit should have secured a knockout.
“I’m more of an offensive coach,” Roach explained, “I’m very aggressive and I was a little bit disappointed in the corner work.
“Ben was telling him to feint and step back.
“Why are you telling him to step back? Let this guy fight, he can get rid of this guy.
“We haven’t spoke about it yet, but we are going to have a meeting and speak with Ben and so forth because I think he was just very safe.
“He said: ‘Don’t take chances.’
“Wait a minute, don’t take chances? You’re in the boxing ring.
"You took a chance when you signed the contract for the fight.
“I was disappointed that he didn’t get a chance to finish him.”
Roach is a legendary, hall-of-fame trainer who famously worked with the likes of Manny Pacquiao and Miguel Cotto.
He was brought into team Fury due to the fact they moved to train at his Wild Card gym in preparation for the Wilder bout.
The American continued: “We had one fight earlier in the night [Isaac Lowe].
“Ben gave the exact same instructions to the 126lbs fighter that he did the heavyweight fighter.
“Why are you saying the same things? Why are you treating these people the same?
“These fighters know each other, but they’re not the same.
“I was a little disappointed. I told Tyson: ‘Maybe I can help him along the way.’
“He did a great job with the conditioning and the weight loss and all that. He’s only a 26-year-old kid.”
Freddie Roach’s comments have drawn widespread criticism from around the boxing fraternity as fellow British trainers such as Dave Coldwell and Adam Booth leapt to Ben Davison’s defence.
Wow.
Really disappointing from Freddie.
A great established trainer, publicly running down the young coach who didn’t have a problem with bringing him on board in order to help Tyson can only be a desperate move to pinch his fighter.
You can’t fault the job Ben Davidson did. https://t.co/65cNsn95E5
